This year’s Met Gala theme, “Sovereign Style: The Art of Black Dandyism,” celebrates the legacy of Black men and queer individuals who have used high fashion—especially dandy style—as a form of resistance, self-expression, and power.

Black Dandyism emerged as early as the 18th century and evolved into a cultural statement: from freed slaves in colonial Haiti donning the clothes of their former masters, to Harlem Renaissance icons like Duke Ellington and contemporary figures like André 3000 and Jidenna. It challenges racial and gender norms by embracing elegance and flamboyance as forms of defiance and pride.
